Sherlock has sent a telegram to Chicago police for information regarding a name that he discovered, Abe Slaney. Cubitt returns to Baker Street with more figures, Sherlock has made some progress, each figure is a letter of the alphabet, some figures have flags in their hands to denote the letter is at the end of a word. Sherlock studies the figures, Sherlock and Watson can tell it's a form of code, Cubitt returns to his estate where more figures appear, one evening with Elsie, she sees someone at the window, Cubitt rushes to chase the character yet Elsie stops him. They were happily married until one day, Elsie received a telegram from Chicago, she threw it in the fire when she thought no-one was looking, the arrival of the telegram made her uncomfortable ever since, and the sudden appearance of the stick figures has terrified her. However, on the day of the wedding Elsie made Hilton make a solemn vow, not to ask of her life in the States. Cubitt describes his wife, an American woman, a Chicago native, they met in London when Cubitt was visiting the Queen's jubilee, her name was Elsie Patrick, they fell in love and were wed.
Sherlock receives a visit from a Derbyshire gentleman with a problem, a Mr Hilton Cubitt he has sent a piece of paper depicting childish stick figures to Sherlock for examination before appearing in person, when he arrives he explains they have upset his wife, they've scared her into mortified state.The synopsis below may give away important plot points.
